What does lung compliance measure?

Lung compliance measures the ability of the lung to expand with pressure. It quantifies how easily the lungs can be inflated, indicating the relationship between lung volume and the pressure applied. When lung compliance is high, the lungs can expand easily with minimal pressure, suggesting that the lung tissues and alveoli are well-functioning and able to stretch effectively. Conversely, low lung compliance can indicate stiffness in the lung tissues, which may be seen in conditions such as pulmonary fibrosis or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
